The department of education and training's most prestigious prize, the Meritorious Service Award, was presented to Jim McAlpine, who retired in July as president of the NSW Secondary Principals' Council, having spent 11 years as an executive member, and a principal (Tumut High School and Moss Vale High School) for 20 years.

“…Jim’s political acumen has seen him contribute, lead and advocate at state and national levels…

…As an educational leader at a school, state, national and international level Jim McAlpine has displayed great integrity, vision, professionalism, intellect, conviction and courage for over fourty years…

…Jim has been the President of the NSW Secondary Principals’ Council for four years and an executive member for 11 years; Deputy and Vice President of the Australian Secondary Principals’ Association for five years and a secondary school Principal for 20 years. In these positions he has promoted NSW public education and training at State, national and international levels. With strategic and innovative leadership of the SPC, he has lead significant innovation across a range of issues that impact upon the leadership and management of NSW public schools. He has created and forged meaningful, valued and influential relationships across the Education and Training portfolio, with other agencies, industry, professional associations and education interest groups.

He has inspired and supported principals, aspiring principals and teachers throughout his career, which has been dedicated to improving outcomes for the students of NSW public schools. His professional life has been characterised by a strong sense of social justice and a commitment to students and public education. Coupled with great skill, intelligence, conviction and good humour, Jim McAlpine’s legacy as a leader is outstanding…"
