2010 Academy Photography Fellowship

Awarded to Steve Pickering - College Principal
Northern Beaches Secondary College, Freshwater, NSW.

The Academy Photography Fellowship provides funding to the amount of $4000 annually to be used for the purpose of educational research.

Steve's research is on Closing the Learning Gap

He writes ...

The nature and purpose of the research is to review international best practice in closing the learning gap for underachieving students by attending an international conference and interviewing leaders in best practice schools. My research findings will be adapted to the Australian context and disseminated to other principals through a written report and conference presentations.

The Academy Photography Fellowship will enable me to attend the United States, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) International Conference in Chicago Illinois between 28 and 31 October 2010 entitled Closing the Learning Gap Once and for All and to interview educational leaders at selected Chicago schools where best practices in closing the learning gap are being implemented. Proven research based strategies for closing learning gaps will be presented at the conference including:  response to intervention, instructional leadership, standards based grading and assessment, whole child education, effective student feedback, data based tracking of student progress, early childhood care and education and change leadership. One of the key aims of the conference is to help and inspire principals who want to learn how to support school-wide efforts to close achievement gaps and advance best practices.

Background to the research on Closing the Learning Gap.
The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) is a United States based professional learning organisation with a membership of 170 000 education professionals from 135 countries. More than 5 000 educators from around the world are expected to attend the International Closing the Learning Gap Once and for All conference in Chicago Illinois between 28 and 31 October 2010. A series of Post Conference Institutes will allow me to interview principals and research programs in action at selected Chicago schools leading the United States in closing learning gaps for African American and Hispanic students.
Research papers presented at the Conference include effective programs for closing learning gaps for Hispanic, African American, Inuit and First Nations groups from North America. Much of this research will have ready applicability to the NSW schools context and have the capacity to substantially improve policy and practice.
